Mid-Life Challenges
The ages of 35 to 50 can be a challenging time in which the decisions one made in their teens and twenties just don't seem to be working at mid-life. The so-called "mid-life crisis" is very real, and deciding which way to go and/or getting support for new direction can be essential to a smooth transition. Dr. Leight has a special interest in this area and is able to help clients find themselves and move forward in new directions.
End-of-Life Challenges/Grief and Loss
Aging, physical changes, limitations and challenges, terminal illness, loss and grief often require the help of a trained professional in order to feel whole and complete during this stage of life. The transpersonal perspective is known to be one of the best for helping clients deal with change and loss in life. Dr. Leight has published in this area, and his knowledge has helped many people struggling with these issues.
Transition and Change
Change necessarily brings about the need to let go of the past and many of our attachments. Again, Dr. Leight's use of the transpersonal approach can help clients to work through the losses inherent in change and transition. While change is inevitable, even the most positive life changes bring tough challenges that may require support and guidance. Dr. Leight has extensive experience in this arena including helping those dealing with the difficulties experienced during retirement.
Mood Disorders
Anxiety and depression are a part of everyone's life. When they become persistent or prevent us from moving forward in life it is time for professional help. Dr. Leight is highly trained in dealing with clinical mood problems, and may work with a psycho-pharmacologist if medication is necessary.
Self-Esteem and Personal Empowerment
At the core of many a human problem is the issue of lack of self-esteem. Our society and culture have told us who we are supposed to be in order to be worthy. Dr. Leight can help you to understand that self-esteem comes from within, and he is highly skillful at helping clients realize their full potential . Shame and guilt can be explored in a sensitive and nonjudgmental manner creating a new sense of self and accompanying personal empowerment.
Transpersonal and Spiritual Psychotherapy
Spirituality and religion are not the same. Dr. Leight bridges Eastern and Western schools of thought encompassing the concept that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. As such a holistic mind, body, spirit approach to life's issues is weaved into Dr. Leight's work with his clients. Some individuals and couples are more interested in working with the transpersonal and spiritual than others, and Dr. Leight will always work within the comfort zone of his client's system of beliefs, values and ideals.
Hypnotherapy and Neurologically Based Change Modalities
Dr. Leight is certified by the state of Florida in hypnotherapy and advocates the use of neurologically based change modalities when appropriate for more difficult client challenges. There are a great deal of misconceptions regarding hypnosis, the result of unlicensed and uncertified hypnotists using stage hypnosis and unscientific cosmic phenomena in their approach. The legal and appropriate use of hypnosis as a therapeutic modality in the state of Florida requires BOTH licensure as a psychotherapist AND certification as a hypnotherapist.
Hypnosis is simply a very relaxed state of mind which helps clients to access unconscious material that may otherwise be inaccessible. As well, people are more open to suggestions to improve well-being in such a relaxed state. Dr. Leight uses safe, gentle and effective methods to help clients reach deep relaxation opening up new avenues for growth and change.
Modern science has helped us to understand how many difficult to change life challenges are often the result of engrained neurological patterns in the brain. These can often be disrupted through certain safe reprogramming techniques that have gained wide spread acceptance in the therapeutic community in the last 5 years. Dr. Leight is continually receiving training in these modalities in an attempt to have the latest tools at his disposal to help clients achieve their goals in therapy.
